Hypertension is a common disease in Germany. 25 percent of Germans are affect by it with many not even knowing it. High blood pressure (hypertension) has symptoms that may increase over time. To prevent diseases such as heart attacks and strokes, everyone can do something and thus lower the blood pressure.

When the blood pressure is too high, the pressure is increased significantly in the cardiovascular system. That is why high blood pressure is also called hypertension. High blood pressure is when values reach at least 140/90 mmHg.

In 90 percent of those with hypertension, doctors can not find any cause for the high blood pressure. This is called primary hypertension. In other patients hypertension often comes about as a result of disease. This may be the case, for example, in dialysis patients. If the high blood pressure is caused by another disorder, it is called secondary hypertension.

While high blood pressure is not diagnosed, it can cause tremendous damage in the body.
