High blood pressure - Nicardipine

High blood pressure - nicardipine

Essential hypertension, i.e. hypertension without organic causes, can be treated with nicardipine. IT works in the nicardipine pectoris and is also used for the heart disease angina.

The active ingredients contained in the capsules are Antagonil 20 and Antagonil 30.

How does this medicine work?

It is a calcium channel blocker, which prevents the calcium to reach the muscle cells. By relaxing the muscle, the blood vessels dilate. This leads to an improvement in blood flow and the blood pressure is reduced.

There is also an extension of blood vessels that supply the heart with oxygen. This leads to a facilitation of cardiac work. The drug is quickly effective, and the effect occurs after thirty to fifty minutes. It is one of the dihydropyridines and almost all of it works from the small intestine.

Calcium antagonists such as nicardipine is often prescribed for hypertension

When the drug is contraindicated?

The drug should not be given to patients with acute myocardial infarction, with an existing hypersensitivity to the active substance, a hypersensitivity to dihydropyridines in aortic stenosis, and in a cardiovascular failure.

For patients with hypertension this drug is administered intravenously.

Increased benefit risk evaluation and increased medical surveillance must be carried out in individuals who suffer from severe liver and kidney disease.

The same is true for dialysis patients. In these groups, the reduction of blood pressure may be increased.

High blood pressure in children

The use in children should be avoided, as the mode of action is not well established.

Moreover, the drug should not be used during pregnancy and lactation, since this drug is excreted into breast milk.

Can side effects in the treatment of hypertension occur?

Side effects may occur, but each person reacts differently to medications.

The most common side effects include headaches and skin redness. Occasionally, fatigue, exhaustion, dizziness, palpitations, rapid heartbeat, and edema can occur in the legs and ankles.

Side effects of nicardipine

Rare side effects include nausea, diarrhea, bloating, hyperglycemia, agranulocytosis, anemia, thrombocytopenia and leukopenia.

An extremely rare side effect may lead to gingival overgrowth, but this is extremely rare.

Gynecomastia has been observed in elderly patients who took this medication for a long time

What side effects may occur?

An increased hypotensive effect occurs when taken at the same time with other antihypertensive agents such as nitrates, beta-blockers, diuretics, or gastric inflammatory agents such as ranitidine or Cimetidn.

Low blood pressure may occur when taken with fentanyl and itraconazole which are used in the treatment of fungal infections. Moreover, the effect of nicardipine may possibly increase in this situation.
