Valsartan and hypertension

Valsartan and hypertension

Valsartan is a drug that deals with high blood pressure in adults and children and can be used for people aged from 6 to 18 years. It supports the treatment of cardiovascular weakness and is good for people with a recent history of heart attack, since it dilates the blood vessels and thus lowers blood pressure.

Furthermore, the drug is often used when other drugs such as ACE inhibitors or beta-blockers cannot be used.

The drug is available both in the form of tablets, as well as an oral solution. It is also available on prescription and should only be used under medical supervision.

The tablets are available in various sizes: 40 mg, 80 mg, 120 mg, 160 mg and 230 mg, and the solution is 3 mg per 1 ml of the active ingredient valsartan. The amount and duration of administration depends on that of the treating physician.

Basically, the tablets should be taken with a glass of water. Unless otherwise prescribed, children who weigh over 35 kg should take 80 mg daily and children under 35 Kg should take 40mg of Valsartan. In adults, the recommended amount is 2 x 2 x 20 mg to 40 mg daily.

Valsartan should not be taken during pregnancy, lactation, hypersensitivity, kidney disease or liver disease because it can lead to serious damage.

For children under 6 years taking the medication for high blood pressure is not recommended.

In addition, everyone should first observe the effect of the drug in itself, because it can cause severe dizziness in some cases, and it can impair the ability to drive and use machines.

Overdose can also cause problems and if this happens, you should contact your physician immediately. If the medication is missed, a double dose should be taken to replace the missing single dose.

Side effects of valsartan

The treating physician should always be informed of the use of other drugs, as this may result in negative interactions. These include drugs used against hypertension, diuretic medication, potassium-containing drugs and lithium.

If you take these drugs at the same time you might notice dizziness, fainting, low blood pressure or a decreased renal function.

Occasionally there may also be certain allergic reactions, muscle cramps, cardiac arrhythmia, Atmennot, swelling, headaches, gastrointestinal discomfort and coughing.

There are no side effects when taken with food. Stopping treatment can, however, lead to a deterioration of the disease and is therefore not recommended.

Manufacturers of the drug include Hexal AG, Ratiopharm GmbH, and NOVARTIS Pharma ACTAVIS.
