What is high blood pressure?

The heart and the blood pressure 

Our heart beats at about 70 times a minute and pumps around 6 litres of blood around our system. At only about 300 grams in weight, it goes through a life-long marathon, if not the body comes to a halt and simply refuses to work. 

The heart makes the blood circulate in a continuous cycle and, together with the arteries, which contract or expand as needed, the heart governs by its power, blood flow, and thus the blood pressure in our body. Everything that flows generates pressure and every pipe system operates according to this principle. Only the blood pressure is not a rigid system is like the water pipes in a house, but a flexible and complicated structure with many variables. 

Many people today suffer from high blood pressure and hypertension is now the most common chronic disease in the modern world. Hypertension is derived from Greek and means something like 'excessive tension'. In industrialized nations, nearly half of the population suffers from high blood pressure and an estimated 40% of deaths in Germany are related to high blood pressure and diseases that are directly related to high blood pressure. 

Causes of high blood pressure include a disturbed cardiovascular system, disturbances in hormone levels and acidification of the body or kidney damage. Consequences of high blood pressure are heart attacks, strokes, atherosclerosis, kidney damage, coronary heart disease or arterial occlusion.

If you are increasingly getting headaches or dizziness or heart palpitations occur suddenly, you should not hesitate to contact your doctor. Also, nervousness, insomnia, impaired vision and numbness can be signs of high blood pressure. Immediately go to the doctor and explain the symptoms. 

General practitioners have very different ways to make a diagnosis. First off is a blood pressure measurement that should include a long-term measurement. Insist on an acid-test, as is often a sign of high blood pressure because of acidification in the body. A load test, such as a bicycle, should also be performed. 

The doctor or medical practitioner now has several ways for you to reduce high blood pressure. He can prescribe medications such as ACE inhibitors (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors or sartans and antiarrhythmic and beta-blockers, calcium antagonists and diuretics, anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs are the most commonly used for treating high blood pressure. These are intended to normalize the pressure in the vascular system. 

In hypertensive the doctor or medical practitioner will certainly also ask about other habits such as sports, smoking and your diet. It has been proven that it is usually these factors which are directly responsible for an increase in blood pressure. Sports make the heart beat faster, the blood vessels must expand and pull back together and be more elastic again. Exercise will also help to reduce weight. Smoking shrinks the blood vessels and thus allows the blood pressure to rise. If you have difficulty with quitting smoking you should try nicotine patches. Increased alcohol consumption is another risk factor because alcohol increases the blood pressure in the body. About one or two glasses of beer or wine can help, but any more can cause problems. Improper diet and being overweight are also causes of high blood pressure because the heart has to work far harder to supply the body with sufficient blood. Various studies show that being overweight can greatly increase (up to about 50%) hypertension. Being overweight can lead to elevated cholesterol levels, which will also increase the risk of hypertension. If you notice even a slight high blood pressure symptom, it is time to change your eating habits and begin light exercise.
